What’s Really in Your Jewelry? What’s Really in Your Jewelry?

What’s Really in Your Jewelry?

Why We Stick to EU Standards When Making Solid Gold Pieces

Solid gold jewelry is often seen as the gold standard (literally) - beautiful, timeless, and safe to wear. But here’s something most people don’t know: not all gold jewelry is made the same way, and that can make a big difference to your skin, your health, and the planet.

At MUSE of My Own, we follow strict European Union standards when it comes to our materials and processes — because when something’s meant to last forever, it should be made with care from the very beginning.

What Might Be Hiding in Your Jewelry?

While solid gold is naturally hypoallergenic, it’s rarely used in its pure form. To make it stronger and more wearable, it’s alloyed with other metals. And depending on where a piece is made, the materials and chemicals used during production can vary - sometimes quite a lot.

In countries with looser regulations, it’s possible to find traces of:

✖️ Nickel

Used to harden gold, especially white gold - but also one of the most common causes of jewelry allergies. In the EU, its use is tightly restricted, but that’s not always the case elsewhere.

✖️ Cadmium

A toxic metal that can cause serious health concerns if worn long-term. Even tiny amounts are banned in the EU, but allowed in small quantities in some other countries.

✖️ Lead

Sometimes used as a cheap filler or bonding agent in low-cost jewelry. Lead exposure is a known health hazard, which is why it’s strictly limited under EU law.

✖️ Harsh Chemical Treatments

Some jewelry is finished with chemical sealants or strong acid baths to boost shine — but these coatings can wear off quickly, irritate skin, and contribute to environmental waste.

What Makes EU Standards Different?

The European Union has some of the most comprehensive jewelry regulations in the world, especially when it comes to consumer safety and environmental responsibility.

Jewelry made under EU standards must:

  • Avoid harmful levels of nickel, cadmium, and lead
  • Be traceable and hallmarked for metal content and purity
  • Follow eco-conscious manufacturing practices
  • Be safe for everyday wear, even for sensitive skin

What That Means for You (and Why We Care)

At MUSE of My Own, all of our solid gold pieces are:

Made entirely in Europe, start to finish
Nickel-free, lead-free, and cadmium-free
Crafted fully from solid gold
Hallmarked and quality-certified under EU law

We don’t cut corners. Ever.

We want you to wear your jewelry with confidence - not just because it looks beautiful, but because you know it’s been made responsibly, ethically, and with real attention to what matters.

Because Jewelry Shouldn’t Be a Mystery

Most people never think about what’s in their jewelry - but we do. Every detail, every material, every decision matters. You’re putting this on your skin. You’re gifting it. You’re keeping it for life.

So we think it should be clean, transparent, and honestly made.

And that’s why we’ll always stick with EU production - for your peace of mind, and for the planet.
